- In preparing to keyboard--or type--first establish a correct
- sitting posture. A comfortable, but alert, keyboarding posture
- is critical when keyboarding for long periods of time. An incorrect
- posture spawns undesired keyboarding habits that are extremely
- resistant to later modification.

- Your chair should permit you to sit erect with both feet
- positioned firmly against the floor. The table height should be such
- that your forearms have basically the same diagonal slant as the
- keyboard. Maintain a distance from the keyboard that permits your
- arms to hang loosely at your side.
-
- The keyboard should be even with the front edge of the table.
- If you are using a movable computer keyboard resist any temptation
- to place it in your lap.

- Pointers for good keyboarding:
-
- 1. Strike each key with the CORRECT finger.
- 2. Memorize key locations--DO NOT LOOK AT KEYS
- 3. CURL the fingers to permit the RAPID striking of each key.
- 4. HOVER all fingers over the HOME keys.
- 5. Palms LOW, but not resting on the keyboard.
- 6. Body BALANCED in the mode of a bicycle rider--body leaning
- forward, etc.

- The Keypad HOME KEYS are the 4, 5, and 6 keys. These are
- controlled respectively by the index, middle, and ring
- fingers of the right hand. The little finger operates the plus and
- minus bars with the thumb controlling the 0 key. Each home key
- finger also controls the keys directly above and below its home
- key station. The decimal may be keyed by either the thumb or ring
- finger, a decision dependent upon the size and position of the
- decimal key. The Enter key serves as the "Entry Clear Key," a
- common component of calculators that permits the deletion of
- incorrect key entries. If your Keypad does not have an Enter key,
- the Enter key of the QWERTY keyboard must be used.

- The blinking key above is the F1 key. It is commonly called the
